Description: The “true-crime boom” of the mid- to late 2010s is even more interesting as it is an acknowledgement of a centuries-long obsession: People love true stories about murder and other brands of brutality and they have gorged on them since the beginning of modern journalism. We have hoarded gory details in tabloids and books and nighttime dateline shows since the beginning of modern programming. Even the thrill of the 1938 radio broadcast War Of The Worlds, an adaptation of H. G. Wells's novel The War of the Worlds that was wrote in 1898 became famous for causing panic among its listening audience. Because the best type of horror is the horror of reality. We as an audience love the feeling of “contained fear” Thats why folklore stories and the horror genre adaptations have such a prominent place within the film industry. But why isn’t fiction enough? Today I want to talk about the problem with True Crime. The ethics surrounding the genre as a whole. And our unquenchable Blood-thirst for it. I also want to discuss how hybrids of the true crime genre have now found a home on the internet and question… Do we even need this? Should True Crime be monetised and if so? How do we, here on YouTube and other media platforms contribute in a positive and respectful way?
